Ars Cameralis Silesiae Superioris

Memory Labyrinth. Faces of Evil 1939—2009

31.07 — 12.09.2009 | BWA Contemporary Art Gallery in Katowice

The exhibition of video art, exploiting the strategies of manipulation done on the representation of history.

The exhibition is presented during period of time particularly marked by symbolically. 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II (1939—2009) creates a situation and give a room for newly taken discussions about the presence — in the collective memory — of the trauma of war, violence, genocide. At the same time, the last decade with the power brought us new threats, new shadows of violence. It is therefore no accident that  the closing of the exhibition took place on September 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York.

In Katowice we presented the works of the greatest artists of video art in the world. In this group are such well-known artists as: Sophie Calle, Chris Doyle, Antonio Muntadas, Nam June Paik, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Bill Viola and Stephen Ballista, co-founder of the legendary New York Squat Theatre. Polish artists were represented by (next to Rybczyński) Mirosław Bałka and Artur Żmijewski. There was also great reminder of famous film „Europe 2” by Franciszka and Stefan Themerson.
