Solar energy accumulated during day is used to lighten the bench at night.

In May 2011, on streets in Katowice a design office SOKKA presented its innovatory project Lightbench. An ecological bench pointed out  the problem of energy in modern world, as well as the need of searching the alternative energy sources.

The project showed how elements of everyday use, beside their primary function of little architecture, can be helpful to the city and enviroment. Simplicity and elegance allowed the bench to integrate with the public space. During day and night, on Katowice's streets, effects of an unique symbiosis of art and ecology were seen.

The official presentation of Lightbench was held on May 8, 2011, during the Celebration of the Silesian Voivodeship at Rondo Sztuki Art Gallery in Katowice. The event was organized in collaboration with the office of European Capital of Culture Katowice 2016.
